KUANTAN: With criminals increasingly using sophisticated means to prey on their victims, the police may have to draw young talents from the Police Undergraduate Voluntary Corps who are savvy in the new technology to join the force.
“Internet crimes transcend boundaries done by simply pressing keys on a computer.
“In order to curb such crimes, the police force needs experts with certain skills to be stationed in our units.
“Suksis (or Kor Sukarelawan Polis Siswa Siswi) is the right platform to recruit these talents,” Pahang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Sharifuddin Abdul Ghani said.
He was speaking at a ceremony to install Prof Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) as the university's new Suksis commandant here on Wednesday.
Sharifuddin said Suksis was inspired by the country's fifth prime minister,Tun Abdullah Ahmad Bada-wi, who believed such corps in the higher learning institutions would help to produce graduates who are competent and disciplined.
Sharifuddin added that Suksis was formed to bridge the gap between undergraduates and the police as well as help to channel information on ways to reduce crimes.
“It is a mechanism to promote better understanding of the law and the Constitution, uphold harmony and peace and build a symbiotic link between the public and law enforcers,” he said, adding that the exposure and experience gained in the voluntary corps also help the youngsters to be engineering and information technology experts.
The UMP corps set up four years ago has 146 trainees, of which 82 are girls.
To date, 24 volunteers have been commissioned as Suksis corps inspectors.
