Huawei, MDeC forge global training centre

SUA: "These students will receive hands-on training in preparation for the challenges of the ICT and telecommunications industries."

CYBERJAYA: MSC Malaysia-status company Huawei Malaysia is building a global training centre here, that will produce 10,000 communications and network professionals over the next five years.

The company is a subsidiary of China-based networking and telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and will be working with the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) to realise the vision.

Huawei will be investing RM10mil to set up the facility at the Malaysia Knowledge Workers Development Centrehere. The training centre is expected to be up and running by year end.

The trainees will be selected students from nine local institutes of higher learning that the company is partnering with, and includes UiTM, Multimedia University, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.

"These students will receive hands-on training in preparation for the challenges of the ICT (information and communications technology) and telecommunications industries," said Sua Chek Hong, deputy country manager of Huawei Malaysia.

Also, the company will invite those already employed in those sectors to participate in the training courses.

This will help the trainees stay aligned with the current needs of those industries while the trainers get to expand on their skill sets, Sua said.

He added that plans are underway to increase the number of university tie-ups at Huawei Malaysia.

Technical hub

According to him, the training centre is not just to boost the local talent pool to drive sustainable economic growth in the two industries, but to also double up as the company's technical hub.

The hub will provide technical support and services for Huawei products and solutions not just for Malaysian customers, but globally.

Sua said some the traits that attracted Huawei to set up the centre were the country's highly skilled and adaptable workforce, as well as the nation's diverse cultural and multilingual environment.

This strategic public-private partnership between Huawei Malaysia and MDeC is not the first.

The company was recently involved in an MDeC-sponsored certification training programme, in which 104 university students took part. At course end, the top trainees received cash awards, as well as the chance to visit Huawei in Shenzhen.

MDeC is caretaker of the MSC Malaysia initiative to transform the nation into a knowledge-based economy.
