Fighting for the environment with a degree
Apart from recycling, reusing and reducing waste, nature-lovers can now become professionals in implementing green technology in Malaysia and beyond. There is an expanding need for relevant expertise in rectifying the deteriorating environmental conditions today.
One of the solutions for saving planet Earth from further destruction is by applying technology and solutions which are friendly to the environment. This specialised field is called environmental technology.
Environmental technology, also referred to as green or clean technology, is the application of environmental science to conserve the natural environment and resources, as well as to curb the negative impacts of human involvement.
At the core of environmental technology is the application of sustainable development, ensuring solutions for environmental issues that are socially equitable, economically viable, and environmentally sound.
The SEGi University College (SEGi UC) three-year Bachelor of Environmental Technology (Hons) programme produces graduates who are literate and competent in all environmental aspects while being able to develop creative solutions for environmental problems.
This programme exposes students to the latest environmental technologies on wastewater treatment, air pollution control and solid waste treatment which will enable them to contribute and work towards a greener environment.
Environmental sciences and management are also incorporated in this programme, equipping students with the necessary scientific knowledge and managerial skills to execute environmental policies and plans in their future work places.
Apart from that, SEGi UC also offers other built environment degree programmes in civil engineering and construction management, which cater to the Malaysian market while incorporating a global context.
“SEGi believes in providing unrivalled facilities and equipment in our engineering laboratories. Here, students have access to laboratories, simulators, design studios, engineering library and workshop facilities. Our classes are conducted by dedicated and experienced lecturers who bring with them professional and vocational experiences,” SEGi UC vice chancellor Emeritus Professor Muhamad Awang said.
SEGi’s Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Civil Engineering is a four-year programme. It enjoys international recognition, with its dual degree awarded by the University of Greenwich (UK).
SEGi Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Construction Management is very industry- driven, covering the managerial and technological aspects of the construction industry. Graduates of the degree are exposed to studies in other fields also related to business, leadership, environmental issues, sustainable construction and English which make them more competitive in the job market.
SEGi Education Group also offers a range of engineering and built environment programmes from diploma to masters level. Diploma programmes available include the Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Diploma in Civil Engineering and the Diploma in Construction Management.
In collaboration with the University of Sunderland (UOS), SEGi Education Group also offers the 3+0 BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering. UOS practises stringent control over the quality of both programmes.
UOS has an international reputation as an innovative university, with a reputation for developing truly industry-driven programmes while working closely with businesses. UOS was named the ‘Best English University for student experience’ by the Times Higher Education Supplement in December 2005 apart from other awards.
SEGi UC also collaborates with The University of Sheffield (TUOS) in offering the 1+3 Master of Engineering degree programme with majors available in Chemical Engineering, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
TUOS has over 120 years of experience in teaching engineering. It is one of the leading UK universities for engineering. The Times Good University Guide 2011 ranked the Mechanical Engineering Department of TUOS as second in the UK, Chemical and Biological Engineering as fourth in the UK, and Electronic and Electrical Engineering as fifth in the UK.
In fact, TUOS has many awards to its name and continues to win awards for outstanding research and contributions to engineering and science.
To help students in need of financial assistance, SEGi offers a list of scholarships, study loans and subsidised fee programmes. In fact, TUOS also offers its own scholarships to deserving students.
