ICT, Engineering focus at DISTED

KOLEJ DISTED-Stamford in Penang, or DISTED, focuses on commerce and industry-related higher education ranging from the provision of certificates to degrees. It offers four degree and three diploma programmes as well as two Australian and British foundation courses.

Since 1987, the college has been a provider of ICT and engineering programmes in northern Malaysia through its partnerships with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Multimedia University (MMU).

From June, DISTED with MMU will offer a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Electronics degree. This course provides specialist knowledge and skills in electronic engineering responsible for industrial and consumer innovations ranging from mobile phones and Internet resources to automation and robotics.

Industrial training will be included to equip students with work experience and to gain insights into the industrial work place.

All coursework contents and examination assessments are approved by MMU.

DISTED also offers a one-year Diploma in Computer Science and IT with entry requirements in STPM, A-Level, SAM or equivalent foundation programmes. The diploma course will give candidates groundwork in the foundations of software development and production of quality computer programmes as well as specialist knowledge in ICT fields. Later, students can jump into the second year of MMU's Bachelor of IT (Hons) and USM's Bachelor of Computer Science (Hon). Both are three-year degree courses.

MMU's degree specialises in data communication with computing and telecommunications technology, while the USM degree covers computer science including software engineering, multimedia, programming and computer graphics.

Such an industry-related qualification leads to a career in ICT, in computing, multimedia, manufacturing, data administration, systems and network administration, software engineering and other IT-based industries.
