Students throw technology at real-world problems

KUCHING: Team Cyber Knightz from the Asia Pacific University College of Technology and Innovation (UCTI) won the Imagine Cup 2011 Malaysia Finals.
The students had developed a system for cancer patients that helps them monitor their health, treatments and diet. They called it the Health3 system.
It also helps the patients and their loved ones reach out via the Web to others in a similar situation, and to access online resources.
Team Cyber Knightz will represent Malaysia in the worldwide finals of the Imagine Cup 2011 in New York in July.
The Health3 system was very much in keeping with the theme of this year's competition, "Solve This," in which participants were required to use technology to help solve real-world problems as defined by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
In second place was Team Filius Educata, also from UCTI, which had developed a system to tackle the issue of domestic abuse. This solution would help abused women reach out to supporting non-governmental organisations and agencies, and alert others to their plight.
Asia Science, yet another UCTI team, was third with its power transmission automation system that tackles environmental sustainability and energy wastage.
Team Cyber Knightz also won the supplementary Innovation Award, presented by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) for the solution with the most business viability.
MDeC is caretaker of the country's MSC Malaysia initiative that is aimed at leapfrogging the nation's progress in the Information Age.
Thirty teams from public and private universities took part in the national finals here on Thursday night. The event was organised by Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and software giant Microsoft Corp, with the support of the Ministry of Higher Education.
